Hi everyone, I am seeking resources for a family with whom I'm working here in Southeast Michigan. Their son is 11 years old and very defiant, rude, and at times, aggressive. The parents are not on the same page about how to address his behaviors, but they are considering different options and one is wilderness therapy or therapeutic boarding school--the closer (geographically) the program to home, the better, but they know they may have to go further. This boy has not been adjudicated on any offenses, so there is no mandated state involvement. I know this list is rich in resources and can hopefully refer us to reputable programs. Do not restrict yourself to this region of the country, though understandably, the closer the better, for the family--the quality and integrity of the program tops the list of priorities though. If you need more specific information to make a recommendation, feel free to e-mail me off-list at acbass18@yahoo.com. Thanks, Adam Cohen Licensed Master of Social Work

Adam - I have two recommendations. The first is in Utah called Aspen Achievement Academy. I have heard great results from that program. The other, which may be closer to home for your clients is Crossroads for Youth in Oxford, Mi. It is a residential treatment program that uses wilderness therapy, and experiential learning in treatment. I am a bit biased because I run the Adventure Center for Crossroads, but it may be something to look into for your client. -Josh
